The Guide

Your one-stop guide to dumbbell exercises.

Dumb·bell /ˈdəmˌbel/

Definition. Dumbbells are handheld weights used for strength training and fitness exercises. They come in various sizes and allow you to target specific muscle groups by lifting and moving them during workouts.

Dumbbells offer several other unique benefits compared to other types of weights.

  • Freedom of movement. Unlike machines or other gym equipment that isolate specific muscles or only allow you to to move in one plane, dumbbells allow for movement in all three of planes.
  • Better functional strength. This freedom of movement can lead to more functional strength, better joint stability, and improved coordination dumbbells require you to use your body as the stabilizer to perform exercises effectively.
  • More comprehensive workout. When you perform a dumbbell shoulder press, you’re primarily moving the dumbbells up and down. However, the instability of the dumbbells requires you to also engage muscles that control movement in the other two planes to keep the weights straight and stable. This results in a more comprehensive workout for your muscles compared to a machine chest press, which restricts your movement to a fixed path.
  • Improved co-ordination. The ability to move in multiple planes with dumbbells can help to improve your overall body coordination and performance in daily activities or sports that require multiplanar movement.
  • Addresses muscle imbalanes. Dumbbells work each side of the body separately. So if one side is much weaker than the other, dumbbell exercises will help find and fix that imbalance.
  • Simplicity & Easy Access: Dumbbells are relatively inexpensive, easy to use, require minimal setup, and adapt to a wide range of exercises and fitness levels.
  • Versatility: Dumbbells can be used for a variety of exercises, making them a versatile tool for whole-body or targeted workouts
