Flax Milk

This relatively new addition on supermarkets’ shelves is produced by mixing cold-pressed flax seed oil with filtered water.

Nutritional profile: The unsweetened versions are low in calories – 8 ounces contain between 25 to 50kcal depending on the brand. It’s also a good source of essential fatty acids and anti-cancer lignans. However, flax milk contains no protein.

Brand watch: The flavored brands are usually loaded with sugar or high fructose corn syrup. Some brands contain carrageenan, a thickener which the International Agency for Research on Cancer considers as a potential carcinogen.1
